Accommodation companies urged to stop demanding deposit from NSFAS funded college students



The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords never to require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This arrives right after NSFAS been given stories about some accommodation companies who demand NSFAS-funded students to pay for a deposit or top-up payment in order to get usage of the permitted private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation companies of the obligatory conditions, as provided by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Settlement amongst the private accommodation companies and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS said in an announcement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states that the rent will likely be paid out regular towards the accommodation company (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf of your lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS terms and conditions for personal accommodation vendors’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not call for or allow the lessee to pay for a deposit, top-up payments, or every other kinds of payment into the lessor, or every other person in connection with this agreement, such as payment of lease, even though awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall haven't any recourse versus the lessee for any default in the payment here of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

The NSFAS conditions and terms for private accommodation vendors’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded as a result of an incorrect selection by NSFAS, the scholar will not be chargeable for payment of any arrear rent into the accommodation check here service provider, up right up until the date of being defunded."

NSFAS defined that in which the NSFAS-funded student chooses to continue occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding becoming defunded by NSFAS, the nsfas student document submission deadline scholar is going to be liable for payment of hire on the lessor from your day of currently being defunded.
